The global physical activity agenda has increasingly incorporated constructs
and dimensions related to promoting healthier individuals and communities. For
this, organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the
Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have
emphasized the importance of physical literacy as a vital component in the
promotion of physical activity and health. Physical literacy encompasses the
effective, social, physical, and cognitive competencies that enable individuals to
engage in physical activity in an autonomous, competent, and sustained
manner throughout the life journey.
Despite its importance, physical literacy remains underrepresented in both
national and international scientific literature. This limited integration affects
research, professional training, and practice, as well as the development of
public policies in Brazil and across Latin America, particularly considering the
region’s sociocultural, educational, and political specificities.
In 2026, the Global Physical Literacy Action Framework (GloPL) was
launched following a Delphi process involving 59 experts from 48 countries and
19 scientific societies from the fields of physical activity, sport, education, and
health. The framework outlines objectives, principles, priorities, and
recommendations designed to guide advocacy, professional practice,
education, measurement, and research related to physical literacy. In this
context, fostering academic and professional dialogue on the synergies and
challenges of integrating GloPL into research and practice in physical activity
and health in Brazil and Latin America is both timely and necessary.
For this thematic issue, national and international experts with recognized
experience in the field will be invited to contribute, and the call will also be open
for the submission of manuscripts presenting original studies grounded in
physical literacy background.
