Abstract

Regular physical activity (PA) contributes to the prevention and control of Noncommunicable diseases, helps maintain body weight and prevents cognitive decline and depressive symptoms. Faced with a higher prevalence of physical inactivity among females, as well as the particularities of women that interfere with their health condition, there is a need to identify and summarize the effects of behavior change interventions on women’s health. The objective of the study was to map the literature on physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior and women’s health women’s health through elaboration of an evidence gap map. After searching the literature in 7 databases in April 2022, 29 systematic reviews and meta-analyses on behavior change interventions based on encouraging the practice of PA and exercise training in women were selected. In all, the effects of 22 types of interventions distributed in 7 groups for 159 health outcomes were evaluated. The effects of interventions associated with outcomes were classified as positive (n = 83), potentially positive (n = 20), inconclusive (n = 10) and no effect (n = 42). The confidence level was low for 12 studies, medium for 10 and high for only 7 studies. The evidence was more consistent and stronger for PA, Yoga, concurrent and/or combined exercise, aerobic exercise, pelvic floor muscle exercise and multicomponent exercise, mainly during prenatal care and for the management of urinary incontinence and cancer.
