Use of Generative AI in Journal Management and Operations
The Brazilian Journal of Physical Activity & Health (RBAFS) uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to support editorial activities and scientific communication, always under human supervision and with full responsibility held by the editorial team.
Tools and current uses
- Turnitin
Used for text similarity checking, assisting in the identification of content overlap and potential plagiarism. Reports are critically analyzed by the editorial team.
- ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Used exclusively for translating peer review reports not written in English, supporting the production of social media content, and revising texts and emails.
- ReviewerCredits
Used for the identification and recognition of reviewers.
- Gemini (Google)
Used as support in the development and adaptation of content for scientific dissemination on social media.
- Canva (with AI features)
Used for creating visual pieces and graphic materials for scientific communication.
- NotebookLM (Google)
Used for developing scripts for the RBAFS Podcast, supporting audio content production, automated transcription of content, and assisting in proof checking, including identifying inconsistencies and organizing information.
Scope and limits of use
The use of AI at RBAFS follows these principles:
- All applications are assistive and do not replace editorial decision-making;
- Initial editorial screening (desk review) is conducted exclusively by human editors;
- Peer review does not use AI and remains entirely human;
- All editorial decisions at all stages are made exclusively by humans;
- All AI-supported content undergoes critical review by the editorial team;
- All content related to articles (manuscripts, infographics, and podcasts) is reviewed and approved by the authors;
- The journal maintains full responsibility for all published content;
- Principles of confidentiality, scientific integrity, and transparency are respected.
Future perspectives
RBAFS intends to carefully evaluate the expansion of AI use to support editorial processes and the analysis of indicators, always considering ethical, technical, and scientific implications.
